Albert Bigelow Paine Biography
Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1937) was an American author, biographer, and literary critic. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts and grew up in rural Illinois. After graduating from high school, he worked as a telegraph operator and journalist before becoming a writer.
Paine's most famous work is his three-volume biography of Mark Twain, with whom he had a close personal and professional relationship. Paine worked as Twain's personal secretary and literary executor, and he helped to publish several posthumous works by Twain, including his autobiography.
In addition to his work on Twain, Paine wrote several books of his own, including travelogues, fiction, and biographies of other notable figures such as Thomas Nast and Sir Walter Raleigh. He also wrote book reviews and literary criticism for various publications.
Paine lived in Europe for several years, where he continued to write and travel. He eventually settled in Santa Barbara, California, where he spent the remainder of his life. He died in 1937 at the age of 76.
