Edward Bellamy (March 26, 1850 – May 22, 1898) was an American author, journalist, and political activist, renowned for his utopian novel Looking Backward, 2000–1887 (1888). Born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, Bellamy was the son of a Baptist minister and a Calvinist mother. He briefly studied law and spent time in Germany, where he became acutely aware of the social disparities of his time.

After returning to the United States, Bellamy turned to journalism, working for the Springfield Union and later the New York Evening Post. His experiences and observations of societal inequalities deeply influenced his writing. In Looking Backward, Bellamy envisioned a future society based on cooperation and equality, which resonated with many readers and led to the formation of "Nationalist Clubs" aimed at promoting his ideas.

The success of Looking Backward spurred Bellamy to continue advocating for social reform. He founded the magazine The New Nation to further disseminate his views and published a sequel, Equality, in 1897. Bellamy's health declined due to tuberculosis, leading to his untimely death in 1898 at the age of 48.
