Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American writer, philosopher, and naturalist, best known for his book "Walden; or, Life in the Woods." He was born in Concord, Massachusetts and attended Harvard University. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and surveyor before moving back to Concord and living in a cabin on Walden Pond for two years, from 1845 to 1847. This experience served as the basis for his book "Walden," which was published in 1854. In this book, he reflects on his time living in the woods and his belief in the importance of living a simple, self-reliant life in harmony with nature. Thoreau was also an abolitionist, and in 1846 he was jailed for refusing to pay taxes in protest of the Mexican-American War and slavery. He wrote and spoke extensively on the subject of abolition, and is considered one of the most influential figures of the movement. Thoreau died in 1862 at the age of 44, but his writings continue to be widely read and admired.
