William Shakespeare (baptized April 26, 1564 – April 23, 1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, Shakespeare's early life remains somewhat obscure, but he married Anne Hathaway in 1582, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith.

           

By the early 1590s, Shakespeare had begun a successful career in London as an actor and writer, becoming associated with a leading theatrical company known as the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later renamed the King's Men. He produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613, including approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and several narrative poems. His plays, encompassing comedies, histories, tragedies, and tragicomedies, have been translated into numerous languages and continue to be performed worldwide.
